Surprise 50th Anniversary Party at NEBG – A Night to Remember

As a private event photographer, I get to witness some truly special moments, and this one was unforgettable. When Tom reached out to me about planning a surprise 50th anniversary party at NEBG, I knew it was going to be something amazing. I had the privilege of photographing their son and daughter in law’s wedding, so I couldn’t wait to document this family again! His wife, Betsy, had no idea. She thought they were just heading up to New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill for some family photos—because, of course, she’s a member and absolutely loves spending time there. But as soon as she walked in and saw all her family and friends gathered to celebrate her and Tom, she was completely shocked.

The family went all out for this special event, setting up beautiful photo displays highlighting memories from their 50 years together. And Tower Hill (NEBG) did what they do best—putting together an incredible spread of food in their gorgeous event space. It was the perfect setting for such a meaningful milestone.

Time for Family Portraits

Throughout the evening, we took the opportunity to capture plenty of family portraits—big group shots, smaller family pairings, and of course, sweet moments between Tom and Betsy. But the biggest surprise of the night? Tom had one more trick up his sleeve.

As the evening wrapped up in the Limonaia, Tom made a heartfelt toast. Some of his siblings joined in, raising a glass with a bottle of wine that had been saved from their wedding… 50 years ago! Let’s just say, the men loved it, but Betsy? Not so much. (Aged like fine wine? Debatable.)

Then, just when everyone thought the surprises were over, Tom got down on one knee—yes, again!—and presented Betsy with a brand new ring. The entire room gasped, and Betsy? She was giggling like a schoolgirl, showing it off to all the ladies. It was the sweetest moment.

The evening wrapped up with a classic tradition—cutting their anniversary cake, surrounded by the people who love them most.
